Fall English Language Learning (ELL/ESL) Course/Curso de Ingles de Otoño

Want to learn English? This twice-a-week course will help you in talking to your supervisors, your children's teachers, neighbors, doctors and more. Classes are taught in small groups. They include speaking and writing, listening and conversation, vocabulary and grammar, and cultural understanding. This class meets every Monday and Wednesday starting September 8th through December 17th . Space is limited. Participants are encouraged to attend every session. Come paint a petrifying pumpkin, a goofy gourd or cute Cucurbita!
Pumpkins and paint will be provided. For children ages 10+ and any accompanying adults.

Join Jenny at the Dunning branch for a morning bird walk at the Dunning Read Natural Area (Park 601). We will be joined by Matt at DNRA and Robyn from the Chicago Ornithological Society. We'll try to spot raptors, woodpeckers, kinglets, creepers, sparrows, rabbits, squirrels, and the resident coyote. Binoculars will be provided. We will meet next to the sign for the DNRA parking lot.

Arts and Crafts: Learning Lines and Textures

Children can drop by this fall and make a collage exploring lines and textures. Celebrating the artwork of American and Mexican artist, Elizabeth Catlett, children will create a textured collage using various materials. The object is to create a unique piece of art, focusing on family or something they are passionate about. Children can also draw a picture on scratch art. The Artist's Studio at the Library provides family art-making opportunities designed in partnership with the Art Institute of Chicago. For ages 6 and up.

Day of the Dead LIVE!

Day of the Dead LIVE! takes you on a musical journey that is all FUN, celebrating Día de los Muertos, the holiday of family remembrance. With diabolical music from classical and popular composers, Mexican and European, this is a one-hour piano and puppet performance boasting larger-than-life characters, including jugglers, stilt-walkers, ghosts, skeletons, and dancers. It's a witty, wild, cultured romp and the ultimate family reunion ‚Äîwith dearly departed ancestors as the guests of honor!Music is performed by the virtuoso pianist Llewellyn Sánchez-Werner. The merry life-sized puppets and direction from the circus-trained aerialist Juanita Cardenas. Join us for our Halloween spooktacular on the Chicago River. Dressing up is a must, and there will be prizes for the best costumes! We will wear headlamps as we paddle down the beautiful landscape of the Chicago River. Children must be at least three years of age and children under 35 lbs will need to bring their own life vest. Please arrive 15 minutes before the start time of the program. Your registration fee covers rental of all equipment plus instruction. Based at the River Park Boathouse, the Chicago Park District's RiverLab program is a series of educational events and activities dedicated to reconnecting residents of Chicago with their river.
